Is Gua Sha Popular in China?
Gua sha has been part of everyday healing in China for centuries, long before it reached spas in the West. Its roots trace back to traditional Chinese medicine, where it was used to treat everything from fevers to muscle pain.
For generations, it was a home remedy as much as a clinical one. Family members would perform it on each other at the first sign of a cold or a stiff neck, often with a simple ceramic spoon.
The technique is tied to the concept of qi, the vital energy that flows through the body. When that flow gets blocked, discomfort follows, and gua sha helps set it moving again.
Jade and other polished stones are especially prized for this work. During the Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644), Chinese royalty popularized using smooth jade to keep the skin bright and the body balanced, treating it as both a beauty ritual and a health practice. That association with jade and refinement is part of why the technique still carries a sense of luxury today.
Gua sha is still widely practiced across China and throughout East Asia. It has also found a growing audience worldwide, from wellness clinics to the facial gua sha tools you’ll now spot on bathroom shelves everywhere.
What Is Gua Sha Like at Tulip Therapy?
The name gua sha means “scraping” in Chinese, and that’s the heart of this technique. Our dedicated expert glides a smooth-edged tool across the skin to nudge stagnant blood and built-up tension toward the surface, where your body can clear it.
Mary starts with a light layer of oil, then uses short, firm strokes along the muscle with the rounded tool. The motion is repetitive and rhythmic, and most people find it surprisingly soothing once they settle in.
Pair it with a session of lymphatic massage for a powerful reset to sluggish circulation.

Curious About Cupping?
Gua sha and cupping both come from traditional Chinese medicine, and they pair beautifully. Learn how cupping draws tension to the surface and why we offer it at Tulip Therapy.
What to Expect: Sha Marks and Redness
Be prepared: gua sha often leaves temporary marks called “sha,” which can look like light bruising in shades of pink, red, or purple. These marks come from tiny surface blood vessels releasing, not from injury. They’re a normal, expected result of the technique.
Most sha fades within two to five days, sometimes sooner. If you have a big event coming up or bruise easily, let your therapist know so we can adjust pressure and placement.
We’ll always talk you through it beforehand so nothing catches you off guard. If you’re concerned about sha, you may want to consider a gentle alternative like Swedish Massage or Lymphatic Massage.
